Tamu Samaj UK Contributes More Than NPR 2.5 Million to Nepal Flood Relief
Kathmandu, 24 September 2026 — Tamu Samaj UK has deposited NPR 2,501,100 (two million five hundred one thousand one hundred Nepali rupees) into the Government of Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. This contribution was raised to support relief and recovery efforts for those affected by the Bhote Koshi flood and other floods and landslides across Nepal. Tamu Samaj UK presented a ceremonial cheque for this amount to Home Minister Sudhan Gurung during a formal meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Tamu Samaj UK launched the fundraising appeal in response to the devastating flash flood of the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa on 26 August 2026, as well as the subsequent floods and landslides that affected families in Dhading, Nuwakot, Chitwan, and other areas. Members of the organisation, along with community groups, businesses, and supporters, generously contributed to the appeal.
Cheque Presentation and Honouring the Home Minister:
A four-member delegation led by Maya Gurung, the founding chair and adviser of the Tamu Samaj UK Women’s Group, presented the ceremonial cheque. The delegation included Bishnumati Gurung, a former First Lady of Tamu Samaj UK; social worker Chandra Bahadur Gurung; and social worker Maya (Dolma) Gurung.
During the meeting, the delegation honoured Home Minister Gurung by presenting him with a khada, feta, bhangra, scarf, garland, and bouquet, in line with Tamu (Gurung) tradition. Speaking on behalf of Tamu Samaj UK and in a personal capacity, Maya Gurung said she was pleased to honour the Home Minister and wished him a successful term in office.
Home Minister Gurung expressed his gratitude to Tamu Samaj UK for raising funds in the United Kingdom and depositing them in the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support those affected by the disaster.
Organisation and Coordination:
Tamu Samaj UK President Bindu Kumari Gurung Ghale, founding president Chitra Bahadur Gurung, immediate past president Shivakumar Gurung, and Treasurer Chandra Kanta Gurung played key roles in organising the appeal and the presentation. Councillor Gyan Gurung of the Borough of Swindon coordinated the meeting with the Home Minister. The management team at AyoRemits UK also helped transfer the collected funds to Nepal in a single transaction.
Senior Nepali journalist Danda Gurung accompanied the delegation and reported on the event. Tamu Samaj UK thanks him for his participation and support.
Tamu Samaj UK extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and landslides. It also wishes a swift recovery to those injured and hopes for success in the search for missing individuals.
Gratitude to Supporters:
Tamu Samaj UK sincerely thanks everyone who contributed to the appeal, including donors, members, community organisations, companies, and well-wishers. We are grateful to those who helped collect donations, represented the organisation in Nepal, arranged the presentation, coordinated the meeting, and reported on this event in the news.
Support from individuals and organisations outside Tamu Samaj UK has also been invaluable. Kate Brown, Abbie Kirk, and Zannelle Davies helped coordinate with Grosvenor Estate and the Westminster Foundation. Narendra Pindoria, the Chair of the Barham Park Veterans Club, also made a financial contribution. Tamu Samaj UK extends its heartfelt thanks to them and to all other supporters of the appeal.
Commitment to Community Service:
Since its establishment, Tamu Samaj UK has worked to strengthen unity among Tamu and other Nepali communities in the United Kingdom, preserve language and cultural traditions, and support those in need. The organisation has previously assisted communities in Nepal during emergencies, including the 2015 earthquake, the Seti River flood, and the COVID-19 pandemic, through relief supplies and financial support.
This recent contribution to those affected by the Bhote Koshi flood and other disasters reflects Tamu Samaj UK’s ongoing commitment to Nepal and humanitarian service.
