Tamu Samaj UK Completes Basic English and Well-Being Classes for Nepali Senior Citizens in London

London, 17 October 2025 — Tamu Samaj UK successfully concluded its free Basic English and Well-Being Classes for Nepali-origin senior citizens in London on Thursday, 16 October 2025, at the Tamu Samaj UK Nepalese Community Centre in Barham Park, Wembley.

The initiative, sponsored by the National Lottery Community Fund, aimed to empower older members of the Nepali community by helping them improve their English language skills, boost confidence, and enhance social integration within British society.

The closing ceremony was graced by the Worshipful Mayor of the London Borough of Brent, Councillor Ryan Hack, who attended as the Chief Guest. Upon his arrival, Mayor Hack was warmly welcomed and congratulated on his recent appointment as Brent’s Mayor. He received a traditional Khada (Nepalese scarf) and a bouquet from Mrs Bindu Kumari Gurung Ghale, President of Tamu Samaj UK, and Mr Chitra Bahadur Gurung, Founder President.

Councillor Hack, representing the Labour Party for the Brondesbury Park ward, made history earlier this year as the youngest Mayor in Brent, elected at age 26 on 14 May 2025, for the 2025–2026 term.

During the ceremony, Mayor Hack presented certificates to the Nepali senior citizens who had successfully completed the beginner-level English training, praising their dedication and enthusiasm for learning. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude and presented letters of appreciation to the class teacher, Mrs Amrita Gurung Thapa, and the members of the management team—Advisor Mr Yam Gurung, Advisor Mr Iman Ghale, Lifetime Member Mr Balkrishna Gurung, and Executive Committee Secretary Captain Teshar Jang Gurung—for their significant contributions to the success of the program.

The classes, coordinated by Mrs Amrita Thapa with support from Advisers Mr Yam Gurung,  Mr Iman Ghale, and Mr Bal Krishna Gurung, were held every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, beginning on 3rd April 2025. Participants received free stationery and light refreshments during each session.

Several community leaders attended the event, including Vice President Mr Bhim Bahadur Gurung and advisors Mr Iman Ghale and Mr Yam Bahadur Gurung, along with other distinguished guests and well-wishers.

In her remarks, President Mrs Bindu Kumari Gurung Ghale highlighted the vital importance of English education for senior citizens and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting this meaningful initiative. She also thanked Mayor Hack for gracing the event as Chief Guest and praised the dedicated volunteer team and the Founder President for securing the grant and ensuring the project’s success.

Founder President Mr Chitra Bahadur Gurung encouraged participants to continue improving their English, noting that language skills would greatly assist them in daily activities such as travelling, shopping, and healthcare communication.

Photographs of the ceremony were taken by Mr Jiwan Gurung, and Tamu Samaj UK provided delicious curry lunch following the event. Although this National Lottery–funded program has formally concluded, the organisation announced that weekly English and well-being classes will continue for the benefit of Nepali senior citizens living across London.

The program was conducted under the special initiative of the organisation’s Founder President, Mr Chitra Bahadur Gurung. The ceremony, which began at 11:30 AM and concluded at 2:00 PM, was filled with a sense of warmth, joy, and community unity. Participants and guests alike expressed their sincere gratitude to Tamu Samaj UK and Mayor Hack for their commitment to education, well-being, and social cohesion.
