Tamu Samaj UK Launches Free Basic English and Wellbeing Classes for Nepali Senior Citizens


Wembley, London—On 3rd April 2025, Tamu Samaj UK launched a heartwarming initiative aimed at empowering the Nepali elderly community in the UK by offering free Basic English and wellbeing classes for Nepali senior citizens residing in the boroughs of Brent, Harrow, and Ealing. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the program is designed to help older Nepali migrants improve their English communication skills for daily life, boosting their confidence and supporting integration into British society.

The classes began on 3rd April 2025 and will be held weekly every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, concluding on 23rd October 2025. Sessions are conducted in a friendly and inclusive environment at the Tamu Samaj UK Nepalese Community Centre, located at 660 Harrow Road, Barham Park, Wembley. Complimentary refreshments, including tea, coffee, and biscuits, will be provided during the classes.

Mrs Amrita Thapa leads the English instruction, while Mr Yam Bahadur Gurung and Mr Babu Ram Gurung manage the administrative arrangements.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Tamu Samaj UK President, Mrs. Bindu Gurung Ghale, who warmly welcomed attendees and distributed free stationery branded with the Tamu Samaj UK and National Lottery logos to the participants.

The event also attracted numerous community leaders, including Founder President Mr Chitra Bahadur Gurung, Treasurer Mr Chandra Kanta Gurung, Mother Group Chairperson Mrs Bimala Gurung, and advisers Mr Baburam Gurung, Mr Yam Bahadur Gurung, and Ms Biju Gurung. Many eager Nepali senior citizens also attended the newly launched course as students.

In her speech, President Ghale emphasised the critical importance of English language education for seniors and expressed deep gratitude to the National Lottery Fund for supporting this community-based project. She also praised the volunteer team and the Founder President for securing the funding.

Founder President Mr Chitra Bahadur Gurung encouraged elderly participants to embrace the opportunity to learn English, which can significantly assist them with daily activities such as travelling, shopping, scheduling medical appointments, and communicating health concerns.

Tamu Samaj UK extends an open invitation to all eligible Nepali senior citizens in the area to join the class at no cost. All learning materials and supplies will be provided free of charge.

This initiative stands as a testament to Tamu Samaj UK’s ongoing dedication to uplifting and uniting the Nepali community through education, well-being, and cultural connection.
